✴️ A Brain stroke is a severe complication of advanced sickle cell disease.
❇️ Sickle cells can get stuck in the brain's blood vessels and capillaries, disrupting and blocking the blood and oxygen supply to brain tissue. This may cause permanent damage to brain tissue.
🚫 A child with sickle cell disease may have a second or even third stroke episode after the first one.
❌ Approximately 405,000 babies are born with Sickle cell disease each year in sub-Saharan Africa, about 79% of annual Sickle cell disease births worldwide. Silent strokes are common, occurring in up to 39% of people with SCD by 18 years of age.

🩺 The risk of a stroke can easily be confirmed in Children who are born with sickle cell disease with a special type of exam called transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD). If the child is found to have an abnormal TCD, a doctor might recommend frequent blood transfusions (a procedure in which new blood is put into a person’s body through a small plastic tube inserted into a person’s blood vessels) to help prevent a stroke.
♿ At times, doctors also recommend an MRI of the brain to rule out any brain damage called silent strokes or ischemic brain infarct. An ischemic stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is blocked or reduced. This prevents brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients, and brain cells begin to die. Children with silent strokes or ischemic brain infarcts are more prone to the risk of clinical stroke.
✅ To prevent a silent stroke, children with sickle cell disease are advised to receive frequent and long-term red blood cell transfusions, the drug hydroxyurea, and stem cell transplantation (BMT).
